“The Supernova” turned in a dominant performance in the “Land of the Rising Sun”
Kyoji Horiguchi defeated Chico Camus in a very important battle in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Flyweight division earlier tonight (Sat. Sept., 26, 2015) at UFC Fight Night 75 in Saitama, Japan.
Horiguchi controlled the distance, using superior striking over the course of three rounds to earn the unanimous decision victory over Camus inside Saitama Super Arena.
All three judges scored the bout 30-27.
The opening round was highly competitive with both fighters moving in and out, attempting takedowns on each other. They kept a good pace, but neither Horiguchi, nor Camus, had much success.
In the second, the No. 7-ranked UFC Flyweight came out swinging and had the Milwaukee, Wis., native in a bit of trouble. He knocked Camus to the ground, but after attempting to take his back, Camus broke free.
Horiguchi opened a cut under the right eye of Camus, which he continued to wipe blood away from. That didn’t halt him from standing in the pocket with Horiguchi, and continuing to trade blows. Horiguchi landed the more significant strikes of the round and was the more accurate striker.
Horiguchi took the momentum of the second round into the third and continued to utilize great footwork, distance control and accurate striking. Camus showed he was game, and landed an occasional solid counter punch, but Horiguchi proved to be the superior striker.
With the win Horiguchi improves to 16-2 and bounces back into the win column after losing to current champion Demetrious Johnson at UFC 186. Camus falls to 14-7 (1) and drops his second fight in a row.
